Cosmetic Porcelain Dental Veneers in Ottawa, Ontario
Hintonburg, Ottawa, ON – When it comes to cosmetic dentistry in Ottawa, Ontario you’ve likely heard the term “porcelain veneers” used, but what exactly is a veneer?
Cosmetic veneers are a thin shell of porcelain or other strong material. The veneer is adhered to the front of your tooth.
Before getting permanent veneers, our experienced Ottawa dentists will first have to reduce the thickness of your natural teeth, to make room for the veneers in order for them to not look too bulky.
What Can Porcelain Veneers Fix?
If you’re unhappy with the appearance of your teeth and want to quickly improve your smile’s appearance, then porcelain veneers may be your best option.
When planning a smile makeover, we can design veneers for as many teeth as are visible when you laugh, smile, or talk. Depending on how wide this span is, you’re looking at anywhere from 6-10 teeth.
Porcelain veneers can improve the appearance of teeth that are crowded, have a slight gap, discolored, chipped, and worn; as well as ones that are too small or too large.
Porcelain Veneer Benefits
There are several benefits to porcelain veneers. Imperfections are addressed quickly and you’ll get to see a dramatic impact on your smile with lasting results. Achieving a better-looking smile with veneers is quicker than braces, and your new smile can potentially boost your confidence level.
Who Are the Ideal Candidates for Porcelain Veneers?
To qualify for veneers, you’ll need to have good oral health and no signs of gum disease or decay. Why? We need a healthy foundation on which to improve your smile!
Dental Veneers vs. Crowns
Cosmetic veneers and crowns are very similar. They’re made with the same two-step process and from the same, or similar, material. The biggest difference is that veneers are generally used for cosmetic purposes while crowns are used to protect teeth. A crown wraps around all surfaces of the tooth, while a veneer only covers the front.
If you’re wanting a smile makeover but have existing decay or previous dental work on your front teeth, we may be able to do a combination of both veneers and crowns to get you the look you’re after.
The Porcelain Veneer Treatment Process
Getting porcelain veneers is a multi-step process that involves:
The Initial Consultation
The first step in your veneer treatment process will be to see one of our dentists for a consultation. During your visit, be sure to share any concerns you have regarding your smile, what you’d like to improve upon, and the results you expect to see.
Our professional team of experts will take x-rays and photos of your teeth that will be used to construct an individual treatment plan for your needs.
Before making the big decision to move forward with porcelain veneers, you may feel more comfortable if we can show you how your new smile could look. If that is the case, we can take a mold of your teeth to make a “wax up” model of the likely outcome.
The Second Consultation
If you decided to have a mock up done of your smile makeover, then you’ll come back for a second consultation with us to view the wax up model.
Once you’re ready to move forward with the proposed plan, we will schedule you to come back for treatment.
The Preparation Procedure
The preparation appointment is your big day. This is when we will do the bulk of the work which will take a few hours.
Once our dental team is done shaping your natural smile, we’ll make a set of temporary veneers to wear while the dental laboratory designs your permanent porcelain ones.
The Cementation Appointment
This will be your final appointment and the day that you’ll get to go home with your new smile. We’ll begin by removing your temporary veneers and cleaning the teeth underneath. Then our dentist will place and cement the permanent veneers.
Tips for Keeping Your Porcelain Veneers Clean
When it comes to veneers, it’s important to remember that your permanent tooth is still underneath it. It’s possible for bacteria to get under your veneer and decay your tooth.
Therefore, practicing excellent oral hygiene is imperative to ensuring the longevity of both your veneers and natural teeth.
Brush at least twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush. When you do, make sure that you’re cleaning the margin of the veneer (the area at the gum where the end of the veneer meets your natural tooth). Daily flossing and regular professional cleanings are important to make your veneers last as long as possible.
Be sure to come for your regular cleanings. During this time, your dentist will also check your veneers to ensure that everything looks as good as new.
